he rhizomes are a pale brown on the outside with a rough texture. They are averagely 1-3 inches in length and 1 inch in diameter with small tubers branching from the sides. On the inside these rhizomes have a bright orange or yellow colored flesh. Part of these rhizomes are used for preparation of turmeric powder while some are reseeded for the next crop. Turmeric plant requires a temperature of 18-30 degree Celsius to grow with an annual rainfall of 640 mm to 4200mm is tolerated by the plant. Irrigation is not required in areas where there is ample rainfall. Sprouting of turmeric rhizomes occurs in a temperature range of 25-30 degree Celsius. They elongate well in the same temperature range but do not survive temperatures higher than 40 degree Celsius. Turmeric grows well in shades but is said to produce better and larger rhizomes when grown in open grounds exposed to the sun. It grows well in loose, friable well drained loamy or alluvial soils.

  • Each root makes one plant. Your roots will be at least 1″ in width. The rhizomes will multiply and you will have turmeric to use, or grow more beautiful plants. The plant is tropical looking, with beautiful flowers and the root will multiply. I have plants themselves listed separately.
  • The turmeric plant is when full grown, large, reaching 5 feet in height and has a growth similar to cannas. Its ornamental beauty makes it a candidate for growing in a flower bed, can also be a smaller houseplant in sunny window.
  • Plant twice the depth of the root in well-draining soil. It is a tropical plant and loves sunlight and warmth.
  • Is used as a spice and herb. Use turmeric roots to make tea or powder. Use the leaves as a pot herb. To make your own tea, add one teaspoon of ground turmeric to 4 cups of hot water and allow to steep for 10 minutes. It has long been used to soothe an upset stomach and ease arthritis symptoms
  • Use the powder to enhance the color and health benefits of bland foods (improves the flavor, as well!), homemade soaps, cosmetics, toothpaste or even dyed eggs or homemade play dough. Researchers have conducted studies that show turmeric to inhibit the development of cancerous cells and to decrease Alzheimer’s-associated brain plaque in laboratory animals. Consult with your doctor before adding turmeric to your diet.
